Last weekend we went over to the Festival of the Forties since we attended last year and enjoyed it so much that we felt we should go back for more. Just like last year the festival did not disappoint and the weather was similarly glorious too. We enjoy the Festival of the Forties because it has a wonderful balance of displays, entertainment and shopping.

As soon as we arrived we spotted some very well dressed people. This was my favourite couple because I love the colours in their outfits and they were just so lovely. I was really quite annoyed that I didn't stop and chat to them more but as we had only just arrived I was all excited to run around and see everything. I was also very envious of her parasol and had already been bemoaning that I had forgotten to bring mine and it was so bright; at least Indi ran back into the house to fetch the sun cream for me!

We had a wander around the displays first which are all very impressive. They have a wide range of different groups which take part and they even have pyrotechnics and things going off with a whizz pop! Also a man in a dug out said I had nice hair, aww shucks!

After that we went and wandered over to the cars. This was my favourite and just so happens to be the same colour as our fridge; I love that fridge. You can see my outfit here too. Since it was so boiling I didn't want to wear anything which was actually vintage so I wore this very comfortable polka dot dress which I picked up from the British Hearts Foundation but I believe it was originally Tesco's! I also wore some modern flat pumps as since the venue is essentially a field the ground is very uneven. Which I found out to my peril at last year's event!

Indi worn his £2 suit from Sue Ryder charity shop. You heard, two whole pounds that suit cost him! He also wore his tie which his granddad gave him.

I really liked this car as the hood ornament was a hare. Inside the engine there was an emergency hammer which said Thor on it so that delighted me too. I have also just noticed that you can see Indi in the reflection there too.

After the cars we then went around all of the stalls on site but I didn't do much shopping; it was so hot and there was very little shade so I flaked out in the shadow of a vintage truck. Even though I was all hot and red I did want Indi to get some pictures of my hair as I had used a tutorial from Cherry Dollface and also tried out my new rats which I bought when I was at Woodhall Spa 1940's weekend. I was pretty pleased with the results and I received some lovely compliments including "if there was a prize for best hair this weekend then you would win it".

After that we went home because it was really getting too hot for me. If you would like more information on the Festival of the Forties you can read all about it here. However now I must say good night, because it's late right now, but join me soon for more vintage frolics and maybe even a bit of hot circle skirt action!

Hello fellow time travellers! Thank you very much for stopping by and I hope you rest a while before continuing on your way.

My name is Rowena and I live in the historic city of Lincoln in England with my boyfriend and fellow time traveller, Indi. By trade I work for Adult Social Care and have done since I was 19. About four years ago I began to be interested in the fashion of the mid-twentieth century thanks to the beautiful Lola Lamour. I watched a documentary called Time Warp Wives in which she starred and I remember it was a total revelation. I was hooked and watched the 30 minute show repeatedly, still do from time to time! I have always loved different eras from the 60's in my childhood to the 80's in my teens but as I grew older I felt I should dress "normal" in an effort to be more adult. I never really felt like I was being myself and wished there would be a style where I could be individual and yet still feel others would take me seriously. I feel that finding vintage has helped me to express my personality through my outward appearance and achieve that balance.

My style tends to vary between actual vintage and a rockabilly twist and Indi and I spend our weekends in the summer attending events for the 1940's and also some rockabilly shin digs too. I'm not too bothered about being 100% accurate and prefer to wear what I feel happiest in so I try not to limit myself to just one decade. We both love the aesthetics of the 1920's to the 1950's. Most days I wear either vintage, vintage-style / rockabilly and the dream is to have a full vintage wardrobe one day; I'm working on it!

I hope you enjoy visiting my blog and reading all the things we have been up to. If you feel like dropping me a line I would enjoy that ever so much and I always welcome feedback of any kind. We stayed in the Hotel St Lucia which is just outside of the town Tropea and located in the region of Calabria; I describe it as being on the top of the toe of the boot. It's a wonderful little coastal town with plenty of colourful local residents and winding cobbled lanes.

Every morning we would take the bus into town and wander to our favourite cafe to sit and drink lattes while people watching. We would then go for a stroll and look around some of the shops, go to the museum, or just explore all of the picturesque little streets. Once we had wandered enough we would then walk down to the beach and sit with our toes in the sand, drinking yet more lattes, and reading. As we went in the first week of October the weather was perfect for me since I don't like being too hot. One or two days were a bit too warm but mainly it was just comfortable for wearing capri pants and a cardigan.

We did break our routine for one day to go on a boat trip out to Stromboli, the active volcano. The trip was for the afternoon and evening so that you could see the lava bursts at night time. Though we didn't see much lava at all we loved standing out on the deck in the cool, clear night and looking up at the milky way. Stromboli itself is so beautiful with its black sands and white wash buildings. The region of Calabria has a heavy Greek influence as historically it was colonised by the Greeks until the 3rd century BC. However, to me, Stromboli had an even greater Grecian feel with the white buildings and blue doors. We wandered around the village a bit but there was not much to do and we eventually found a cafe we could get some dinner at and, you guessed it, a latte! Strolling by the sea there I felt so relaxed and as though I had not a care in the world, which I think is the whole point of a holiday.
We had a very nice time, did far too much shopping, and drank tea. I must admit I was a little sceptical as to how much I would find as 40's and 50's vintage can be hard to come by. I was, however, pleasantly surprised and did plenty of shopping!

I had been feeling like dressing 1940s and couldn't wait to dress up in my new suit which I bought last weekend; I got a few compliments which were very lovely. You can see on my lapel is one of my purchases from today which is a very sweet brooch. While at the fair I also bought a lovely dress which is hand made but I fancy the cut is very 1940s. It's quite silky so I will have to wait for the summer before I can wear it; it's far too chilly out there! My final purchase was a 1930s style peasant blouse for only £8. I have been looking for a peasant blouse for ages but couldn't find one I liked so I am extremely pleased with this little bargain!

After we had been around the fair and seen all there was to see we headed into town to have a look around some of the vintage shops. I found a very nice 1950s vanity set which appears unused in Mr Bojangles. I can't wait to go away somewhere so I can fill it up with all of my lotions and potions. Unfortunately we didn't make it to see Relentless play as I got the date wrong and they played yesterday. I was so disappointed but playing with all of my new purchases made it easier to cope with.
Life has been quite a whirlwind lately and things have been really taking off for us. The biggest news I have to tell you is that my boyfriend and I have found a place and will be moving in to a little house together at the end of the month. I'm so excited to move for a number of reasons but mainly because we've been together for three years now and I can't wait to live with him. I've been busy for a fair few months and only blogging as and when something has really compelled me to. However, I have another thing on my side to motivate me to do more blogging soon. Procrastination! On top of moving house, working full time, and my other commitments I have also recently started an Open University Course. This isn't a degree and only runs till September so I should be finished in time for Pickering War Weekend but it's still quite intense.

Any way I have planned my time so that I hopefully don't have to study at the weekend and hey! moving house can wait while there's serious vintage things to do such as shopping and nights out. This weekend we are planning on going to a Vintage Fair on Saturday at the Engine Shed. It's open from 10am till 4pm so plenty of time to mosey on down and only costs £2 to enter. Now I don't always find very much to buy at events and fairs
because my perception and retailers perception of what is affordable can sometimes be a little different. Our perceptions of what is vintage or not can also be a little out of whack but we won't go there! I still enjoy attending events for the atmosphere and also just in case I miss out on a bargain or something totally irresistible. People often ask me where I do most of my shopping and it's a mix of fairs, wartime events, vintage shops and online. Last weekend I got some amazing bargains in the Sue Ryder charity shop over in Peterborough and have no doubt I'll be showing off some of what I snagged over this coming weekend. I have an urge to go 40's!
Saturday evening I'll be having a bit of a costume change and we will be heading out to the Rock Haven bar in town to catch one of our favourite local rockabilly bands Relentless. They often play around town and occasionally can be seen outside Binns (that's House of Fraser to most folk). We love seeing these guys in town, particularly in summer when you can sit outside in the cool breeze, watch some fantastic live music for free and, my favourite part of this ritual, snaffle down an ice cool strawberry milkshake. Alas! It is winter and in case you don't know it there's weather going on out there. So I'll most likely be wearing something that's as sensible as I can manage like my Freddies of Pinewood jeans.Rowena Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03754324791917088449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-906925679752578350.post-7311469471406869352013-11-16T19:33:00.002+00:002013-11-16T19:33:55.526+00:00Dare to BearFor Children in Need this year myself and a couple of other ladies took part in the Dare to Bear campaign and didn't ware any make-up. As a part of the social and events committee at my work I also took part in the pyjama day too so I pretty much looked like I'd just rolled out of bed, in a 1940s housecoat. It was very interesting listening to some of the opinions one or two others felt about coming to work without the war paint. I thought it would be so easy to begin with but as time progressed and I was thinking about what I would be wearing I then found it difficult to extricate to make-up from my 1940s image.

While not being vain I wouldn't say I was awful to look at without make-up yet I had a hard time going out in 1940s dress without being fully "made". I feel that I have spent so long working on this vintage "look" whether that be of the 1940s or 50s which includes the make-up. So when I tried to take that away it felt kind of odd. When I am doing my make-up for an event, which is far more dramatic than my daily make-up including eye liner and bright red lipstick, as I put each new layer of make-up on I feel I am becoming more myself and then when I'm finished it's like I recognise me again.

I hadn't realised this was happening but going without the make-up really reminded me that I am always myself even without all of the paint. It was a good feeling so today I decided to go totally natural; it also saves so much time getting ready! So here I am in my natural state without make-up and with my plain old straight hair.Rowena Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03754324791917088449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-906925679752578350.post-70942451217368909952013-08-30T10:57:00.000+01:002013-08-30T10:57:52.362+01:00Woodhall Spa 1940s WeekendLast year we went to the first Woodhall Spa 1940s weekend and I have been looking forward to it for a full year ever since. It was a wonderful weekend last year and this year did not disappoint either. It is such a well organised event that it feels like a well established one which has been running for years; a testament to the organisers! There's so much to see that we didn't manage to make it to see all of the displays and re-enactments which is a shame because from the look of other people's photos they were amazing.
The first day I didn't take any pictures at all but on the second I managed to get my camera out once or twice. We met the lovely Helen who I have seen around at other events since Woodhall including Twinwood.
We had cream tea at the Petwood Hotel while watching Brandon Shaw which has to have been the highlight of the weekend for me. We saw the amazing Lola Lamour singing too but alas my photos are very grainy since we were stood right at the back.
This lovely photo of all four of us was taken by Michael Hill over at http://survivor79.smugmug.com/ I was wearing the outfit which I bought from Festival of the Forties the weekend before. The blouse I can't put my finger on where or when it was made, the trousers are reproduction but I have totally forgotten who made them and my handbag is from a charity shop. I'm terrible at this outfit posting lark!
It rained right at the very end of the day but that didn't make the day any less enjoyable and we still sat and listened to the music Major Swing was playing right to the very end. This was outside the Lancaster Inn at Woodhall Spa so once the music finished we toddled inside for our dinner which was handy and very reasonably priced. They have a special 1940s menu too which was fun!
When I got home I was so tired that I got straight into my pyjamas and 1940's house coat and had a lovely hot chocolate before bed.
Yet again it was a wonderful weekend held at Woodhall Spa and I have already put next year's dates in my diary, and you should too! Woodhall Spa 1940s weekend will take place on the 19th & 20th July 2014.Rowena Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03754324791917088449noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-906925679752578350.post-32179710392169212412013-07-31T21:35:00.002+01:002013-07-31T21:35:11.429+01:00Festival of the Forties Last weekend we kicked off the 1940's events summer calendar with the Festival of the Forties over near Peterborough. Location wise we are really lucky because I live in Lincoln which is easy to get to the events in the north of the county and my other half lives near Peterborough so we can stay at his to get to the events further south such as Twinwood Festival over near Bedford.

This was our first time visiting the Festival of the Forties as we had planned to go last year but it was rained off and had to be cancelled. It was such a shame that the festival didn't get to go ahead last year but I'm really glad they were deterred and came back again this year. The weather was beautiful and we had a great day. It was only £6 to enter so very good value for money. My favourite part had to be the shopping, and I spent far too much money, but there was a great array of living history displays.

I wore my dress from Eclectic Gypsy which I bought about 2 years ago and wore once. After that I gained some weight and it no longer fitted. I was thrilled and it felt like I had a brand new outfit. There's quite a few pictures but I hope you enjoy them!
I am a red head again! I dyed my hair for the Americana a couple of weeks ago and have been loving the new brighter shade of red. I tend to do my hair in this style a lot and have got it down to quite the fine art; I can do this for work in the mornings and not have to get up any earlier than usual (I take about 40 minutes getting ready in the morning). The sunglasses I got for free from Specsavers since I was waiting a very long time for my reading glasses.
Now this was said in a totally complimentary way and I shall take it in no other but it made me stop and think. I was a little stunned if I'm honest. Courage? What's so courageous about wearing clothes?

Our society is very keen on the image people present and so are many creatures in the animal kingdom; what do peacocks use their feathers for if not showing off? We have evolved though and gained a higher level of intelligence; to be so concerned with what others look like seems like a step in the retrograde to me. So why would wearing the clothes I like require courage? Then I remember the times I have walked through a town, wearing a circle skirt and blouse or some other 40's or 50's outfit, and had gaggles of girls giggle at me as I walk past. These experiences are not just the fruits of paranoia before someone suggests it! These situations have actually happened to me and when I look back on them I realise that to someone else the comments, stares, and giggles would be enough to make them go home and change. I carry on despite them, in some cases because of them, and am undeterred in my love of dressing vintage. I suppose that is what they meant by courage.
It was long ever due I can tell you and I'm so excited to have got the events calendar started again even if it is a little bit later than most; at Easter it was Crich Tramway Village's 1940's weekend which is usually the first 1940s event for most of us but I unfortunately didn't make it.

The Historical Bazaar was a mixture of all different reenactors and I really enjoyed mingling with knights and Romans as well as 1940s friends. We met up with a couple who we know from when we used to do lindy hop dance lessons and explored the ground together.

It rained and was pretty cold when the sun went in so I sure was pleased to have brought my umbrella and my fur! When the sun did come out it was glorious but there were a couple of hail storms during the day, luckily I was in the shopping tent when that happened!
And a final photo of me with my time travelling partner in crime. As well as being vintage I'm a big geek and in particular a Whovian (Dr Who fan). I often think he's my very own Dr, travelling to different places and back in time together. We have an Audi though which is no where near as cool as a TARDIS. I mean think of the luggage space in that thing, it's bigger on the inside!

Sometimes I think that because of the vintage style in which I dress that people make the assumption that I have very old fashioned values and also that I'm a bit posh. I am neither of these things and I do enjoy shocking people when they find out the amount in which I swear. Although I love the aesthetic of the 1940s and 1950s I certainly do not feel that I would like to live in those eras. I am very forward thinking, especially in regards to feminism and women's rights, and I am passionate about equality.

Last week I saw a programme on BBC4 called "How To Be A Lady: An Elegant History". Now I don't particularly aspire to be a lady so I wasn't looking for an hour of televised finishing school but I was at home with not a lot to do so thought I'd give it a try and if it was just that I would turn over and watch something else, like Don't Tell The Bride. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the programme and felt that it generated a lot of comments of my own which I was compelled to write about since it is linked, in some way, to vintage. I felt like some comments chimed well with my own feelings of being a woman but most importantly I did not feel patronised. I did not feel that someone was talking down to me and questioning my femininity purely because I do not behave in a certain way or know how to create the perfect posy.

You don't have to live in a country pile to be a lady

The show was hosted by Rachel Johnson who previously edited The Lady magazine but admitted herself that she was not a "lady" which instantly made me feel as though I was "in the same boat" as her. She also pulled the handle off a door while being taught the correct etiquette on how to leave a room which made me warm to her even more! She looked into how a lady was originally defined and how perception of what it means to be a lady has evolved over the decades. I won't recount the whole show to you but touch on the two main points which struck me most of all.

First of all Rachel visited an establishment called The English Manner which provides "international training and consultancy in contemporary
etiquette, protocol, the
arts, social skills, household and event
planning." and it was there that she pulled off the door handle. She spoke to some young women who were at the Manner being taught etiquette and she also met Diana Mather who was one of the teachers. I am paraphrasing here but basically Diana was saying that there is a return to all things lady-like in recent years which she feels is due to our security as women in our equality with men. She acknowledged that men and women are different and believes that women feel able to go back to being more lady-like and treated as such without having to behave like men in order to be taken seriously.

"Playing the Lady" - dealing cards backstage during Carry on Jeeves

I feel that there is not total equality between men and women and there is still a great way to go before this takes place which is evident through the media, equal pay, and most of all people's own attitudes towards the other sex. The most common form of sexism I face is that of everyday comments from people all around whether that be a male colleague trolling me to my face with sexist comments just to get a rise out of me or a male shop keeper being patronising. I do however agree with Diana when she talks about celebrating the differences between men and women. We are different, no lesser than the other, but different none the less. I don't want to feel that I have to behave or dress or act like a man just to get a head or be taken seriously. Equality to me isn't about being the same as everyone else, in fact it's exactly the opposite, it's about being different and acknowledging that but treated with just as much respect.

Later on in the show Rachel spoke to Bidisha who is a feminist writer and you can read her blog here. By this part the show was drawing to it's conclusion and looking at what place, if any, being a lady has in the future. Bidisha was saying that the model of womanhood that's being represented to us through the media is not what some women feel they want to respond to. Through fashion and media women are objectified and it's all very cheapening. She was saying that in fashion there's often more flesh than cloth on show and there's a reaction to this to cover up instead and to be the opposite. There's a trend which is bringing back the formality and elegance to a culture which these days is just quite vulgar. Bidisha said that she feels that being a lady is now so divorced from it original meaning, and the class system it was entrenched within, that we can now take the power back. We can reinvent what a lady is and what it means into being a "brilliant, strong, and sisterly woman."

Do I look like a lady to you?

Well now! That was just such a revelation that I got straight on the phone to my boyfriend to tell him of this enlightening experience I had just had. I have always wrestled with the juxtaposition of being vintage and yet also being a feminist. I've tried but never really found a way to articulate my feelings and there Bidisha said it and I knew it was how I felt about the way that I dress. Now I know she wasn't particularly driving at fashion and clothing but around a whole culture within our society but still her statements drew lines directly to my own feelings of my personal style. YES! I felt like shouting. Now I know that vintage and feminism can go hand in hand. The way I dress is not to harken back to an age where if you fell pregnant you lost your job or equal pay was as common as fairy dust. To me the way I dress is in defiance of the video vixens, the boobs, bums and glossy hair that women are defined by in today's media. So I spend time on my appearance; I like it when I've done my hair in a nice do, and yes I have an unhealthy (for my bank balance) addiction to buying dresses. I am a woman, I am different from men, I enjoy those differences. And no, one shall not be getting one's assets out for the lads.

So there you have it folks. I'm sorry it's been a long and wordy post but there's just so much I wanted to express. I also would like my blog to have more substance than here's a hat I wore or here's a place I went. Hopefully you've enjoyed this post and I would really, really, love to hear any comments or feedback you may have.
I have done some acting in the past but it was around 9 years ago and I was about 16 years old so I'm not totally sure it counts. I played a lady called Agnes Nitt in a production of Terry Pratchett's Carpe Juggulum and was thoroughly self conscious the whole way throughout mainly I think due to my age. About a year ago though I suddenly had an urge to get back on stage again. I had this insane urge to everything all at once and really piled my plate high with responsibilities. Over time these things have come to an end and my role in the play Carry On Jeeves was the last of those. I didn't have time to feel at a loose end though as I have jumped both feet first into my next performance.

I found it really stressful being in a play but I believe that was mainly down to the fact that I like to catastrophise all situations and I really got it into my head that I was going to ruin the whole thing. I didn't though; I didn't really have a big enough part to be able to ruin the whole play. I'm sure you all know about Jeeves and Wooster as it's very well known so I won't bore you with all of the back ground. I played the part of Lady Florence Cray who was the love interest of the leading man, Bertie Wooster. I not only had to pretend to be posh I also had to pretend to be a really nasty and shouty person; really quite the opposite of how I actually am. I don't know, all this acting lark!

Anyway here's just a few photos from backstage which was an absolute riot, if a very quiet one.
I was down visiting my boyfriend in Stamford; he usually comes up to Lincoln but he had a night out with his colleagues and I was invited. We didn't let the snow stop us from enjoying some beautiful scenery though. Here are some of our pictures from today.
On the way back to the car though the wind had picked up and I got ear ache so was less than happy. To cheer me up Indi took me to one of my favourite places when I'm down there; the OK Diner. Ok, so it's a diner by the side of the A1 but it has a 1950's theme, plays awesome music including Buddy Holly, and also serves the best Root Beer Floats. Mmmm root beer!

In all the time I dress vintage I have found that I actually very rarely get complete strangers compliment me on my style save for at events. I think it's because at events lots of people are dressed up too where as when walking down the high street people might be less inclined or feel they may be being rude. The first compliment I received was from a young lady who was working in a vintage charity shop we went into; she said that she liked my outfit and style. The second was from a lady older than myself who said that she liked my "whole look". I was really flattered, especially because earlier I had been repeatedly asking my boyfriend if I looked frumpy, and I thought I should share my outfit with you all since it was well received in the shops of Peterborough.
My dress is 1940's and I bought it from Etsy. I had to pay an extra £14 charge for customs once it arrived but I think it was worth it. I really love it and can see myself wearing it a lot at the spring and autumn events due to the weight of the fabric. You can't see it because I'm wearing my coat, which is from Collectif, but it has a very large collar and the top is in cream. My hand bag is from a vintage shop in Lincoln called Mr Bojangles and though I don't really know the era of it I chose it because it is the closest match in my collection to my shoes which are from Clarkes. Here's a close up of the handbag and the lovely tooled leather which drew me to it in the first place.

My absence has been due to a number of factors which I won't bore you with since I'd feel like I was moaning and really I'm not. I've been eager and planning on getting back to blogging for some months now and here I finally putting finger tips to keyboard; but then something happened and I didn't know what to write. It felt strange, like I was beginning for the first time all over again, and I felt like I ought to do something to introduce myself and say "hello world" for the second time.

I haven't been away from reading other's blogs but unable to write my own due to time and tools so when I came across the Vintage Tag post on Jessica's blog at Chronically Vintage I knew it would be just the thing to reintroduce myself and also get me back in the game. So here we have for your reading pleasure my answers to the 21 vintage lifestyle questions, enjoy!

21 Vintage Lifestyle Questions and Answers

1. Who are your style icons?

Red, white, and blue

I would have to say that I'd find it very difficult to pick out and name just a few as I feel there's so many influences. I've been gradually finding "my style" within vintage and am gathering collections and outfits which I feel reflects me though it can change so quickly depending on my mood, the occasion, or what era I'm enjoying at the moment. Although I tend to stick to either 1940's or 1950's in my outfits inside I feel it's all a mash up of "every day" women from the times, rockabilly, and Hollywood glamour all tied together with a bow on top! My biggest influence in both clothing and life style is Lola Lamour as I'll explain in a later question.

2. What is your favourite way to get inspired?

Blogs. I love reading other people's blogs and would say that it's been a large factor in my pursuit of vintage; I also dabble in a little Pinterest which many will testify is extremely addictive. Other than that I find that looking at the outfits other ladies are wearing at the events we go to is very inspiring. I enjoy looking at the different styles of dress from those who dress military to the Land Girls and then the civilian clothing.

3. What's your most used hair tool?

Hair spray - to the point that once my boyfriend told me that he likes the smell of hairspray as it reminds him of me. My name is Rowena, and I'm addicted to hairspray.

4. What's your favourite hair tool?

Can I say hair spray again? I have an issue. But otherwise it's my curling tongs which are covered in roses and were a Christmas present a couple of years ago from my boyfriend. They're really small as they are in fact travel ones but really they are the only thing to get a curl in my infuriatingly poker straight hair AND they don't burn my hair like my Nicky Clarke curlers used to.

5. Updo, down or half and half?

My hair unusually down, celebrating my beautiful friend's
birthday

I would say that totally depends on what my straighter-than-Jesus'-geometry hair feels like doing on the day and also on what the event is. Generally though on a day to day basis my hair is tied back in a pony tail.

6. Is vintage something you do every day, on weekends, or for special
occasions?

If left to my own devices I would definitely do it all day, every day; however I don't go all out vintage when I am at work. I have had a few comments though on how I'm quite vintage styled and I think the vintage still shines through.

7. What's your favourite blush and lipstick?

I don't wear blush as I have never really felt it necessary since I get a bit pink generally anyway. When it comes to lipstick I would say I'm easily pleased and own lipsticks from a ranges of prices but my favourite has to be Boots Natural Collections in Crimson. It's a cheap brand and yet I always favour that lipstick over all my others. I also own a nice Boots Number 7 one in bright pink which tastes like vanilla, yum!

8. Dress, skirt, or pants? Heels or flats?

Is that an offer? No, I have to choose my favourite? Oh alright. I would say that around 85% of the time I can be found in a pencil skirt and flats as that's what I always wear to work.

9. Off-the-rack or homemade?

If I buy "new" clothes then they do tend to be off the rack but I'm working on that homemade aspect too and have been sewing a pencil skirt in my spare time. I've only been working on it since October 2012!

10. Do you swing dance?

I'm going to have to say no. I have been to Lindy Hop dance lessons with my boyfriend back when we both had more free time but by no stretch of the imagination can I dance. That's not to say my dance teachers weren't good, they were fantastic, more like I am un-teachable. Just too stubborn to let someone else take the lead.

11. Extreme vintage or subtle touches?

During the working week then subtle touches but come the weekend it's generally extreme vintage or rockabilly twist.

12. Favourite perfume?

Hairspray it would seem. But mainly because I don't wear any perfumes since I hate them. On other people they are nice but too much perfume or perfume on me and it's yuk!

13. Favourite skincare product?

Moisturiser since now that my skin isn't so spotty it likes to be dry and flaky instead, mmm nice!

14. What does your family think of your style?

I think they really like it. They definitely support me in it and buy me lovely purchases for presents. I think my sister offers most in the way of discussion about it, my motives for doing it, the social aspect of it, that sort of thing but not in a horrible or nasty way, just discussion.

15. Favourite accessory?

One of my vintage micro misaic brooches because I find wearing other accessories a bit of an annoyance sometimes but a brooch you can pop on, look pretty, and forget that it's even there. Until you put it in the washing machine, dun dun dunnn! My favourite mosaic is my red love heart one which was a gift from my boyfriend.

At a dance last November with my boyfriend and a friend from dance class

16. Do you find the vintage community welcoming or snobby?

If I am being truly honest I have found mixed welcomes but I put that down to individuals and not the community as over all I have met some really amazing people though vintage and they have been more wonderful and down to earth than I ever would have imagined.

17. What drew you to vintage style?

Un-vintage Me

Over all I think I have always had fascinations with different decades since I was young. I remember I used to fray my jeans and bleach or tie dye anything I could get my hands on when I was young because I wanted to be a "hippy" and I loved the whole "earth child" thing of the 60's. I was a small child so I think it's totally acceptable and I'm only partially embarrassed by it. Later on when I was in my teens I moved on to the 80's and I have to admit a lot of my music taste still languishes in the realms of the electro pop of the decade. I still own one prom dress from the 80's which I don't think I will ever part with. It's neon and garish and I love it. Then I became an emo, a massive emo to be precise, I can admit this now with the wisdom of age. I still retained my 80's love though and mixed the neon with the black to create the jolliest emo looks. Then I grew up and I wanted my style to as well since I was tired of everyone thinking I was 12. I tried dressing "high street" but something was off, something was missing, I wasn't quite ME. Then on the telly was a lady called Joanne, though these days she's more known on the vintage scene as Lola Lamour, and that moment was a total game changer (check out my 1980's buzz words!). Lola was in a show called Time Warp Wives and from the moment I saw it I was totally taken with the whole idea of a vintage lifestyle. Years later (last year in fact) my boyfriend and I met Lola and her husband Kevin at the 1940's weekend in Woodhall Spa and I have met her twice more since then. They were absolutely wonderful and we were both totally star struck.
18. Favourite places to shop vintage?

Etsy and for real life shopping Tasty Vintage in Lincoln.

19. What vintage eras are your favourite?

1940's and 1950's - that's easy.

20. Most glamorous film stars?

Glamour is a very personal thing, what I would define as glamour may well be very different to the opinion of others.

21. Favourite vintage object that you own?

Make up compacts which I
received for my birthday

My pristine, unused vintage Stratton make up compact. Along with the micro mosaic brooches I also collect make up compacts and in particular Strattons. My friend Becca started my Stratton obsession when as a birthday gift she gave me a coral coloured one with a lovely gold starburst on it. While I was inspecting it I noticed the name Stratton and instantly recognised it from a 1950's advertisement. That moment something began and now every time I see a Stratton I must buy it! I do have two criteria which I also apply to my brooches; they must be under £10 and I must personally like them, I wouldn't just buy one for the sake of it.

So there we have it! My answers to the game of vintage tag, I hope everyone also considers themselves tagged and it continues on. I have enjoyed answering the questions and sharing more of where my love for vintage came from.

Until next time!

I wish so much that I had taken more photos while we were at Twinwood however we had
such a great time that I just got carried away in the fun. On Saturday I have
to say we spent most of the day shopping and I bought the most wonderful hat!
In the evening we saw Max Raabe and his Palast Orchestra. They were beyond
anything I had anticipated and I wish he would play at more venues in England.
Unfortunately we left a little before the end of his set due to being so tired,
it was a very long day doing all of that shopping.

On the Sunday we spent a little longer getting ready and also
went to a local supermarket to pick up some items to have a picnic. My only criticism
of the weekend was the food stalls; the only thing I could find to eat was
bland mushroom noodles or fish and chips. However having our picnic was ever so
much fun and at least we know for next year.
the Casablanca Steps who were fabulous and I giggled away all through their
set. No because I am rude mind you, but because they are so funny! The banter
between songs was hilarious and the music top notch to boot! After that I
finally got to see Lola Lamour and her Lamours. They literally blew me away!
They played a fantastic range of songs and kicked things off with a cover of
Tainted Love, one of my all time favourite songs and throw back from my 80’s
obsession when I was at college.

Last weekend on the Sunday we went to the second day of the
Woodhall Spa 1940’s weekend and even though we had spent all of Saturday there
too there was still a lot to do and see. On the Saturday we hadn’t found time
to make it to the Jubilee Park to look around the stalls and also on the Sunday
Lola Lamour would be performing twice outside at The Mall. As we had got to
Woodhall Spa a little later than planned, due to wardrobe malfunctions, we
decided to have a scone and cup of tea and then head straight to see Lola’s
second performance.

We loitered for a while near the performance area and got
chatting to one of the organisers, and then Lola came out to see them so I
quickly jumped in for a photo opportunity. She also commented on my dress and
said how cute I looked. I couldn’t say much in return, I was too nervous!

Having a little walk around before she began singing we
bumped into Winston Churchill who gave a brilliant speech before Lola’s

still glorious it was quite windy and for most of the day I was grabbing my

By the time Lola’s performance began there was quite a crowd
and people were dancing in the road because there was so little room. Hopefully
though this will mean they can close the road next year due to health and safety, it’s
such a shame they weren’t allowed to do that this year as it would have
fantastic to have a proper street party. It was brilliant seeing Lola sing and
she’s such a performer doing songs by Marlene Dietrich and Carmen Miranda! It
made us very excited for Twinwood Festival where she will also be performing
with her band The Lamours. There was also Douglas Herd up there with her who is
96 years old and was promoting his book of his experiences in the Second World
War.

After Lola’s performance we quickly made out way over to
meet both her and Kevin, her husband. We’re huge fans of them as a couple ever
since we saw them on the television show Time Warp Wives on Channel 4. That
show and the women on it are one of the main things that got me interested in
vintage and the 40’s & 50’s. Previously I had been into the 1980’s in a
very big way but as I was growing up I wanted something more grown up too, I
wanted to be taken seriously yet also retain my style. It was a very big deal
for me to meet them and they were just brilliant, everything we had hoped for.
They were polite, genuine and very interesting to talk to; not that I could
manage to talk much, I was so star struck!

That afternoon we made our way to Jubilee Park to see if
there was anything left on the stalls or if we had missed it all. If I’m honest
I do most of my vintage shopping on line or in Vintage shops local to Lincoln
and very rarely find anything I like or can afford at the events. On our way
back to enjoy a cold drink at the pub and watch the final fly past of the
Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster (which was amazing by the way) we bumped into
a couple from our Lindy Hop class. It was really lovely to see them and just we
were excited to tell them we had met Lola they were excited to tell us they had
met the Jive Aces. We’ll be seeing them tomorrow at our second dance class

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and in the UK it's finally sunny, hooray! Yesterday we went to Woodhall Spa, a quaint little place in Lincolnshire steeped in RAF and Dambuster history, for their first event 1940's festival. Considering it's their first the whole day was well organised and very well attended with many people, like ourselves, dressed up in period costume.
When we got to Woodhall Spa we headed straight for the Kinema in the woods as they were holding a WW2 theme show in their cinema. Those of you who don't know about Kinema and have never been should go!

The Kinema used to be an old sports pavilion and in 1922 was transformed into a cinema with a Charlie Chaplin film being the first ever shown in it. The main screen has a flat floor, so lets hope no one tall sits in front, and due to the low roof trusses the projector is at the back of the screen and not the auditorium. In 1994 Kinema Too was opened which has a graded floor and the comfiest cinema seats I've ever sat on. My favourite aspect of Kinema, other than the fantastic period decor, is that there's an intermission. When I was a child and there still was intermissions I thought they were the most pointless thing in the world, on with the show I thought, now I see the great value of them. Ice cream is served and also a much needed comfort break can be taken. During the intermission, usually only on Saturday nights, an old Compton organ rises up from the floor in front of the screen and plays a selection of old songs. Everyone cheers the organist, even the teenagers!

For the 1940's festival they played a selection of WW2 songs on the organ and some in duet with the piano as well as played some WW2 footage of government films and singers. There was a bit of a sing song too, it was a fantastic atmosphere and in the surroundings with everyone dressed 40's it was like a time machine and really brought home the messages of some of those films. It was all very real and in parts made me quite sad for those who lost their lives; the real reason we do things like this is to remember those people.

There was a vintage vehicle display further in town but we couldn't resist a pose with this one outside the Kinema. One thing we were so happy with was the weather. Many events lately have been cancelled due to the weather and I have been feverishly checking the forecast the week before hand to see if the same would happen this weekend. Happily not and there was a great turn out of people in the town, it must have been a great day for local businesses.

All of the shops had made a great effort and there were some great displays. I like cake so obviously this was my favourite one.

We then hopped on this old London double decker which was doing return journeys to Thorpe Camp visitors centre. Since it was so late in the day we only got about 15minutes at the Camp but it was worth it for the ride though the countryside alone.

When we got back to Woodhall Spa it was nearly 5pm and the festival was supposed to finish at 4pm, also I was feeling ill because happily I have a throat infection and a cold, so we decided to head home without seeing the stalls and things going on at the Jubilee Park. We're saving those delights for today as the festival is on all weekend. Today we will also be seeing Lola Lamour perform, she's my idol and I just can't wait!

Something which I have been thinking more of lately, in the
past year or so, is feminism and that’s down mainly to Caitlin Moran and her
wonderful book How to Be a Woman. I’ve read many girly guides to life in the
past and many contain a wealth of knowledge of how to apply nail varnish, what
your handbag essentials should be and how to choose a hat for Ascot. I have to
say none of the information has stuck. I still apply nail varnish like I did
when I was 13, the essential items in my handbag appear to be used tissues and
old receipts, and I don’t wear that many hats let alone feel the need to wear
one to gamble in (I don’t gamble either). When I read How to Be a Woman I chose
it because I liked the cover, because yes I really do judge a book in that way.
Caitlin Moran looked cool and my 13 year old self informed me to idolise this
woman on the basis that she has a silver streak in her hair (I wanted one when
I was 13) and no more information than that.

Strident Feminist or 50's Housewife.
Is it possible for a woman to be both?

I read the book while on holiday in Italy and then passed
the book on to my mum to read. When I got home I gave it my boyfriend, because
I knew he would enjoy things such as “bum-gina”, he then lent it to his mum,
she also appreciated the “bum-gina” joke. After that I got on a chair, or my
bed, and declared myself to be a strident feminist. I then got off the bed and
watched my other idol, Lola Lamour, on Time Warp Wives which if you haven’t
seen it is about modern women living vintage lifestyles 24/7 including being
housewives.

The juxtaposition is still something that jibes me and I
haven’t made peace with the fact that I have these two very opposed influences
in my life. Looking around the internet at the blogs and tweets of other
vintage ladies I feel they too live with these opposing forces. Many of the
women on there are also very feminist and yet also dress in full vintage
outfits; it seems the two even go hand in hand.

For me personally vintage is about standing out from the
crowd and seriously refusing to go with the mainstream flow. I take pride in
walking down our high street and looking not a jot like anyone else; I imagine
it’s the same for many other people who wear vintage. It’s that stubborn
quality which I feel links so well to feminism and could possibly be why it
works so well with vintage. I’m refusing to conform to many things when I wear
vintage and that doesn’t just extend to shopping in Topshop, etc.

A while ago I did a post, Land Girls on BBC1, about how much I enjoyed the television show and I got a very pleasing response to it indeed. The writer of the show, Roland Moore, commented upon my little post thanking me for my feedback. I was some what delighted and thanked him for his response, I was even daring enough to ask that I might ask him a few more questions as a short interview for this blog. He's a much obliging chap and agreed to do so!

And so this is what transpired; I hope you find it entertaining and insightful!

Having never
worked in any form of media I felt a little out of my depth but soon I realised
that perhaps an insight into script writing from the perspective of someone
like me might be actually interesting; after all not everyone out there knows
all about media. So I sat and I thought, and I got a bit of advice. I realised
I know nothing so that’s where to start, exactly how does writing a television series,
like Land Girls, happen?

For Land Girls, I submitted
an idea outlining the story for each episode and an overview of the main
characters, plus a summary of the series. There wasn’t a script at that stage.
I knew (in 2008) that the BBC wanted to schedule programmes to commemorate the
70th anniversary of the outbreak of WWII, so my idea just arrived at
the right time. A five part series was commissioned for broadcast in September
2009.

As a child I was
shocked to find out about rationing and yet more shocked to find out that many
children were healthier than they are today. Surrounded by our comforts and
luxurious lifestyles it can be difficult to imagine what a situation like the
Land Girls may have faced. How does someone from the 00’s manage to portray an
era which many of us could literally not imagine today? I already guessed
research would be the key factor, but how did Roland go about this?

I spoke to former Land Girls
and read first-hand accounts of their times on the farms. I also read academic
books on the subject. When we came to write the series, we had historical
researchers helping us with any period details. This was invaluable.

Any period drama has to
juggle a line between total attention to detail and dramatic licence. The real
Land Girls typically worked 12-14 hour days, but we could only give a flavour
of that – otherwise most of the screen time would show women digging fields and
planting crops. Such authenticity would have resulted in a fairly uneventful
drama.

In terms of authenticity, we
came across an interesting phenomenon: people will have an idea of what is
correct for a period, but sometimes that idea is based on perception and not
facts. So viewers would ‘feel’ rather than know that something was correct or
incorrect. For instance, I realised the word ‘fantastic’ came into use in 1939
and ‘snog’ was already being used, but if I’d included them in the dialogue,
people would have complained that they weren’t accurate for the period. So
sometimes you are working to those perceptions rather than actual facts.

I can see how
difficult it must be treading the line between what is accurate and what the
audience may expect or want to see.
Having done some of that magic research on Roland I found out he has
also written for the BBC series Doctors. There must have been a bit of shift
between writing for such dissimilar decades and even I realised there must have
been some differences in the style, language and tone.

Language and tone are
definitely different for period drama. There is an argument between Bea and
Annie in Series 1, and I wanted Bea to say the equivalent of ‘whatever’. It was
obvious that this word wasn’t used like that in the 1940s, and as I researched
for an alternative, I realised that there wasn’t a World War II equivalent.
People were just more polite back then.

Interestingly, we had
complaints about a very minor, half-glimpsed sex scene, but no one seemed to
mind an extended scene of a man being forced to his knees at gun point before
someone is shot.

My Grandmother was in the ATS during the
Second World War and the Women’s Land Army is already a subject of great
interest to me, but what about other people? Why would they be interested in
such a dark period of our Country’s history? Probably for the same reasons I
am!

I wanted to write a drama
about the Land Girls because it was a time of major change for so many women.
They were forced to share living arrangements with other girls – from all
different backgrounds – in an era when women only really left the family home
if they got married. I was really interested in the themes of independence and
empowerment and these friendships forged through adversity.

Separation from your loved
ones was a theme that I also wanted to include as it affected a lot of people on the
home front. And it has resonances with anyone in the present day who has loved
ones serving overseas. There was that feeling that the war was bigger than any
one person and that everyone was a vital but small cog in the machinery of
winning that war. So I wanted to show Joyce’s sadness at being separated from
John, but wrestling with her need to be patriotic and ‘do her bit’. That was a
big emotional heart in the series.
We tried to keep it on the down low for quite a few months, which I think actually added to the fun of it, and we didn't actually go official until September. Although we have decided that our anniversary should actually be on the date that line between friendship and relationship blurred beyond all recognition, our first kiss.
So it's a short little post, and please looks away if you don't do saccharine sweetness, but Indi thank you for a wonderful year.
Shhh! It's A Speakeasy took place on the 3rd June 2012 and, as far as I know, was Lincoln's first vintage and burlesque nights. I was, of course, first in line for it and remember when I found out it was going on I was literally so excited. The whole thing lived up to all my hopes.

During the day there were some vintage stalls for shopping, I bought two pairs of gloves, a blouse and a present for my sister. I spent a good long time chatting with Rachel from La Vida Vintage and with a great mass of vintage gloves sat right next to me as we talked I couldn't help but walk away with two new pairs.

The whole event was made possible by the lovely Natasha, with me above, who organised the whole thing single handedly. Hat's off to a lady who makes things happen. Our boyfriends also had a nice chat about what it's like to have driven, vintage girlfriends which I thought was really sweet and it got me thinking about how patient mine is. It's a hard life being with a vintage girl; the time we spend on our hair and the force field of hair spray around it (he says that the smell of hairspray reminds him of me!), the constant questions of how's my hair and are my seams straight, and not to mention putting up with lipstick marks on most items of clothing.
During the day there was some fantastic blues from the Blue Tongue Preacher and Jez on guitar; who against the Trade Description Act actually has a pink tongue like the rest of us. That evening there were burlesque performances from Loretta Lace, Foxie La Roque and Rose Desire and in between performances the atmosphere was kept up by a fantastic selection of tracks DJ'd for us by 52nd Jump Street, they even showed us a few moves on the dance floor.
